Tips on Estimates

SIDING
*Are all estimates for the same material (steel siding vs. steel siding)?

*Do they all have the same type of thickness and insulation?

*How many door and window wraps were figured? Is that number correct?

*Do they all include rain gutters and downspouts -- seamless or not? Removal of old siding?

*Some siding contractors will include removal and disposal in their estimates. Others may propose to reside over your existing siding. It will cost more for removal of your old siding, however, the finished home will look much nicer. By removing your old siding, any rotten wood underneath will become evident, and be a perfect time to take care of it. You may have more than 1 layer of existing siding, the more you have, though, the more it will cost to be removed.

*Do all estimates include soffit and fascia? What material are they using for this?

*Some contractors use aluminum, some use vinyl, be sure you know.

*How much of a down payment is required? Make sure it's minimal. You shouldn't have to be financing your contractors operations.

WINDOWS
*Be sure the estimates include the same number and style of windows.

*Does the price include removal and disposal of old windows, along with installation of the new ones?

*Are the new windows going to be inserted or full frame replacements?

*Check to see how much of a down payment is required. It should be minimal, there is no point in paying for something you haven't received yet.

*If the estimates are not an "apples to apples" comparison, be sure you know what the differences are.
